Download MobileViews ThemeCalc The Microsoft Pocket PC 2002 Theme Builder PowerToy (or whatever Microsoft calls it after it is released for general distribution and download) is an easy to use tool. You may want to use an image editor (I happen to use Jasc PaintShop Pro) to precisely crop the image to fit either the Today Screen or Start Menu. I wrote ThemeCalc to help me perform this simple, but tedious when done many times, set of calculations. ThemeCalc runs on both the Pocket PC 2000 (Rapier) and Pocket PC 2002 (Merlin). Of course, the Themes themselves only work on a Pocket PC 2002 unit. ThemeCalc is a small simple applet (it isn't complicated enough to warrant being called an application) to help you crop an image that can be resized to precisely fit the 240(width)x268(height) Today Screen and 150(width)x290(height) Start Menu. I usually use the PaintShop Pro Selection Tool to get a feel for what part of the image I want to use for my Today Screen or Start Menu. I take note of either the height or width that I want to use as the basis of calculation. For example, I want to use a part of the image in Figure 1 that is 1100 pixels high.
This is obviously much more than the maximum 268 pixels allowed in the Pocket PC 2002 Today Screen. So, I enter 1100 in the ThemeCalc Today Screen Section and press the Calculate button. You can see in Figure 2 that I need to select 985 pixels in width to get an image size that can be resized precisely to 240x268 for the Today Screen. You can use either a Height or Width as a starting point for the calculation. ThemeCalc fills in the blank with the correct answer. Calculate will note to anything to a filled in pair. One field in the pair must be blank for Calculate to work.
You can clear either just the Today Screen or Start Menu calculation fields by using the associated Clear button. You can clear all four fields by using Clear All in the Tools Menu. Resizing the image from 985x1100 to 240x268 results in the Pocket PC 2002 Theme Today Screen (reduced to 65% of the actual size) you see in Figure 3 below.
