  • MobileViews Podcast 212: More 10.5-inch iPad Pro discussion

    1. As we noted during the Note 7 debacle, that troubled product barely caused a blip for the diversified giant Samsung Electronics firm. “Samsung second-quarter operating profit likely rose 72 percent from a year earlier to a new record, beating analyst estimates, as strong memory chip prices helped widen margins.” Ref: Reuters
    2. iMore 10.5-inch iPad Pro review
    3. May not buy any kind of smart connector keyboard cover for the 10.5-inch iPad Pro. Apple’s smart keyboard for the 9.7-inch model is fraying after a little more than a year of use. My original use-case for the combo is not as important now that I have a Samsung Chromebook Plus. The Logitech Slim Combo with detachable keyboard for 10.5-inch iPad Pro is interesting but has a 3 to 4 week shipping time from Apple’s online store and is not available at my local Apple Store. In addition, the $130 keyboard cover has 2.5 (out of 5) star review. Multiple reviewers commented on its bulkiness.
    4. Duet Display on sale for $9.99.
    5. Procreate on the new iPad Pro
    6. Jon’s iPad Revolution: Down to 1!
    7. Jon’s hidden gem: Run your own MacOS Server at home, use Profile Manager… $20 to buy Server (Free if you’re a developer), $10/yr or so for a SSL certificate (May be able to use letsencrypt.org for free).
    8. letsencrypt.org – cool service that provides a trusted SSL certificate for free, wicked simple setup.

  • MobileViews Podcast 209: Sans Todd

I was unable to participate in my own podcast! But, Jon Westfall and Don Sorcinelli carried on without me…

    1. DailyDoodlers.com. Todd’s new site. Have not launched it yet. But, if you would like to share your doodles somewhere, you can do so from your own Medium.com site.
    2. Amazon buying Whole Foods. Will instantly give Amazon 460 physical stores in the US, Canada, and the UK.
    3. Microsoft Modern Keyboard has a fingerprint reader but costs $130.
    4. Also a Microsoft Modern Mouse
    5. Forbes: Google Backup & Sync launching on June 30
    6. Jon’s Latest Discovery: CrashPlan “Headless” on Linux. Great for VPSes. $150 a year for up to 10 computers, unlimited backup, unlimited versions.
    7. A former co-worker of mine posted the following on Facebook – “With the restrictions on carrying on laptops on international flights and the threat of having your phone surrendered to customs agents, it’s a matter of time before IT shops have to maintain “burner” laptops and cell phones that can be used temporarily, but if you lose them or they’re damaged, no big deal.”

    1. Google Chrome will have a selective ad blocker in 2018. Ref: Google

    4. Travel tech observations:

    5. Rented a 2017 Toyota Corolla and found that the built-in USB could charge and iPhone 7+ but not a Nexus 6 when running Google Maps while driving. However, using a third party charge plugged in to what used to be called a cigarette lighter was able to charge the Nexus 6.
    6. You can find more that streets and businesses with Google Maps. Searching for “Yoda fountain” in San Francisco leads you to the statue of Yoda from Star Wars outside of a Lucas Films building in Presidio.
