I never understood why Microsoft kept creating new maps with each new release of MapPoint/Streets & Trips that were incompatible with earlier versions of Pocket Streets. Now add one more data point to this sillyness. Microsoft stopped releasing Pocket Streets after the 2005 map editions. However, Streets & Trips 2007 can still create maps for Pocket Streets. The gotcha? It doesn’t seem compatible with the version I’m running on my Windows Mobile 5 devices. Ah well. I really do need to find an affordable map applications for the Pocket PC and Smartphone that works with a Bluetooth GPS. Any recommendations?
Smart2go is designed for a touchscreen phone. It works on a Windows Mobile smartphone, but is really awkward to navigate. Runs super-slowly too on a 200 MHz processor, takes about 30 seconds to start up.
Also, it’s really designed for a data plan. The offline loader is incredibly unreliable. In about 8 tries, I’ve gotten only 1.5 successful runs of the offline data loader (the 0.5 is a run that failed halfway through, and not due to lack of space either). Have tried on various versions of Windows, with various phones, with various SD cards. Their test matrix is obviously woefully incomplete.
But then, what do you expect, they’re owned by Nokia. They obviously test on all the Nokia phones, and leave the other WM devices to be “If it works, it works.”
DeLorme 2008 Street Atlas has a PPC program included with the disk that allows you to make and view maps from the program. I haven’t tried it yet so no clue as to how good it is.
Smart2Go is free, and so are the maps. You can even pre-load them onto the memory card using the ‘Nokia Map Loader’ application.
Navigation is a paid-for extra, but just seeing where you are on a map doesn’t cost anything. The map data that I’ve checked – for Edinburgh – has been good, too. No guarantees about anywhere else, though.
I’ve got it working fine on my HTC TyTN with an BT GPS.
